  John Walter Mahony

For some little while now I have been researching the history of the above and have finally managed to unearth the last few details.

Firstly, may I explain that my great-uncle, one John Baker MAHONY (sometimes recorded as 'Jack' Mahoney), married Amy Ann RELF (b 2 Nov 1865), a daughter of Charles George RELF and Elizabeth Ann CARTER. These Relfs were part of the tree/family of Margaret R. RELF, #016 (and other IRS Members).

John Baker Mahony and Amy Ann were blessed with a son on 19 Apr 1894, the subject above. John Walter was employed as a shipping clerk upon the outbreak of war in 1914 but immediately (on 6th August) enlisted as a rifleman in a Territorial Regiment, 1/9th Battn (Queen Victoria's Rifles), The London Regiment.

His record, very briefly, is that on 1 July 1916, the first day of the infamous Somme offensive he was severely wounded and totally blinded; upon his return to England he was taken in hand by St Dunstan's and, eventually, after training as a physiotherapist employed by them at their rehabilitation centre at Rottingdean.

He married Frances Knight LONG on 25 December 1917, at Falmer, Ssx, there being no issue. He died on 7 Jan 1963, in Brighton and his wife died 15 Mar 1970, also in Brighton.

I felt that you would probably like to have a record of this individual and his parents for Society records and in this respect I enclose copy certificates in respect of his birth, marriage and death and also that for the death of his wife, Frances K.
